In light of the continuing threat and physical distancing requirements posed by the coronavirus pandemic, the WREMAC is eliminating the annual skills requirement for 2020.

There are a few important caveats to this announcement:

(a) Individual EMS agencies and/or service medical directors may continue to require evaluation of provider skills at their discretion, and

(b) Providers new to an agency should undergo skills verification prior to delivering patient care, and

(c) Annual skills are required under the CME-based recertification program through the Department of Health. This state requirement, as of this writing, has not been suspended.

Despite this cancellation, the WREMAC strongly encourages agencies and service medical directors to find ways to support their providers’ skill maintenance.

Emergency services is a unique and rewarding profession, but it can burn you out if you let it. As first responders, we can be exposed to more intense stressful situations in one week than the general public will experience in a lifetime. Up to now, the emphasis has been on critical incident stress interventions after the fact. They are valuable, and should be used when necessary. We also need to develop psychological resiliency before the fact, to lessen the impact of critical incident stress, and bounce back after those difficult calls, and life in general.

The NYS Bureau of EMS and Trauma Systems has implemented an EMS Certification Reinstatement Program for providers whose NYS certification is expired.

Below, please find the details pertaining to this program:

For providers whose certification expiration date was January 1, 2019 through August 31, 2019:

1. Apply for reinstatement: https://apps.health.ny.gov/pubpal/builder/survey/expired-verification
2. If no issues with previous certification, provider will receive new card that expires 12/31/2020
3. The new certification will be issued at the level of care to which the provider was previously certified

For providers whose certification expiration date was January 1, 2015 through December 31, 2018:

1. Apply for reinstatement: https://apps.health.ny.gov/pubpal/builder/survey/expired-verification
2. If no issues with previous certification, provider will receive new card that expires 12/31/2020
3. The new certification will be issued at the Basic EMT level (unless the provider was previously certified as a CFR – in this case a CFR card will be issued).

Anyone with a certification expiration date from September 1, 2019 going forward, the Bureau has added 1 year to the certification expiration date.  Simply look at your expiration date and add 1 year.  If verification is needed for employment reasons, you can contact your regional EMS program agency (Wyoming and Erie Counties: UBMD EMS Division).  Each agency may also request one person to have access to the Health Commerce System where EMT certification information is found.

To request access to HCS:

1. Go to: https://commerce.health.state.ny.us/public/hcs_login.html
2. Select “Create an HCS Account“
3. Complete the registration process
4. Once complete, please e-mail Scott Wander and request registration to be complete (additional info will be requested at this time): srwander@buffalo.edu (contact Scott only if your agency is in Erie or Wyoming County)

We are working to update the UBMD EMS Portal with the new expiration dates.
