Greetings,
The New York State Department of Health Division of EMS has just released Policy Statement 25-09 regarding the use of Supraglottic Airways for EMTs. A few things to note:
- Agencies who were approved under the pilot program do not need to resubmit for authorization.
- When your agency certification expires, you may be required to provide proof of the required data reporting and policies and procedures contained within the policy.
- Agencies are not required to possess recording and printing capabilities for continuous waveform capnography. A device that displays the waveform and end-tidal carbon monoxide (ETCO2) level is the minimum requirement.
- If an agency possesses a cardiac monitor with continuous waveform and ETCO2 capabilities, basic life support practitioners may use this feature when inserting an SGA, provided they are properly trained on agency specific equipment.
