Important NYS EMS Memorial Update – New Fall 2024 Memorial Date Announcement

By April 25, 2024No Comments

Greetings Everyone

A message from the NYS DOH BEMS:

Dear EMS Community Members,

Since its establishment in 2004, the New York State Emergency Medical Services Memorial in Albany has stood as a solemn tribute to the brave souls who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty as an EMS provider.  Each year, we honor these heroes by adding a star of life to commemorate their service and sacrifice. With over 100 names inscribed, the memorial holds deep significance for our EMS community.

Recognizing the need for expansion due to space constraints, nearly two years ago, the SEMSCO and the department embarked on a journey to expand the memorial. Through meticulous planning, our goal was to ensure that the new memorial would pay homage to both past and future honorees.

Regrettably, despite our best efforts, the contractor who is building the new memorial has faced unforeseen delays in the supply chain and logistical processes. As a result, we have recently received notification that the new memorial which was scheduled for delivery in early May will not be ready as planned.

After thorough deliberation, we’ve concluded that the best course of action is to postpone our annual EMS memorial service, originally slated for May 22nd, 2024, to the Fall of 2024. This decision wasn’t made lightly; it was rooted in our commitment to uphold the dignity of our fallen EMS providers and ensure the new EMS memorial’s completion with the utmost care and precision.

We extend a heartfelt invitation to all of you to join us in the Fall of 2024 as we gather to honor the memory of the eight EMS providers whose names will be added to the memorial. This event will also mark the unveiling of the new EMS memorial—a testament to our enduring respect and memory for those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

Once the Fall 2024 EMS Memorial date has been confirmed we will make sure to share all the details with the entire EMS Community.

While we understand that this change may pose challenges, we deeply appreciate your unwavering commitment to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice serving the EMS profession. Should you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact District Chief Gina Wierzbowski at gina.wierzbowski@health.ny.gov or myself at any time.

Thank you for standing with us as we commemorate the selfless service and sacrifice of our EMS heroes.

With respect and gratitude,

Ryan Greenberg
